What is Data Migration and Data Integration?

Data Migration is the transfer or copying of data from one IT system or multiple IT systems to another IT system. It typically involves:

•    the use of a standard set of scripts which the supplier of the receiving system will provide;
•    a standard tool (hardware and software) provided by the supplier of the receiving system;
•    a technical engineer with specific experience of data migration projects and scripting;
•    involvement of an operational team of people from the organisation who is changing the systems to check and test the data using templated and standardised test scripts;
•    a data cleansing team;
•    lots of planning, managing and testing – best overseen by a project manager experienced in data migrations;
•    gobbling up a fairly large pot of the project budget and then the Oliver Twist moment “please Sir, may I have some more”;
•    tough decisions on whether it is absolutely necessary to migrate all the data – it may be a high financial cost for a poor return!

Data integration is the process of combining data residing at different sources so as to provide users with a unified view of all the data.
